The Meaning of Life
There
was a man in the Bible called King Solomon who thought he knew what
life is all about. But he also thought he had better check out some
alternatives, just to be certain.
First,
he decided to improve his knowledge of the world around him (which we
might call 'further education'). Being a powerful king gave him access
to all kinds of information and he carefully learned and recorded as
much as he could. At the end of the day it was clear to him that being
informed does have the edge over being ignorant. But also that, whether
we are clever or not, we all end up in the grave anyway.
Then
he decided to indulge himself with everything that caught his eye: we
would call this "materialism". Again, being a powerful king,
money was no barrier. Houses, gardens, lakes, servants - you name it,
he did it. And what did he find? All sorts of things. For one thing,
that we are never happy with our lot, no matter how much we've got.
For another, that "you can't take it with you, when you die".
So
he knew he had been on the right track all along. And he summed it up
as follows:
13
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep
His commandments, For this is mans all.
14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every
secret thing, Whether good or evil. |

In
other words, if our goal in life is merely to "get on", leaving
no place for God, it will be an empty life. There is a better, a higher,
aim in life that is altogether more satisfying.
Jesus
put things into the right perspective, when he said,

But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added
to you. |
